CMAA Announces 2018 Class for College of Fellows

CMAA members are nominated and selected in recognition of their demonstrated leadership in the industry, their significant contributions to the profession, the industry, the association, and their commitment to the future. The FCMAA designation is one of the highest honors CMAA can bestow on an individual member and this year’s honorees are no exception.

“These three individuals were selected for their contributions to the success of CMAA, their dedication to CMAA’s core objectives, and their commitment to the future of the organization,” said Edward Bond, CCM, FCMAA, Chancellor of the CMAA College of Fellows. “I look forward to their future success and to the new perspectives they bring to the College’s work.”

The College of Fellows seeks to represent a diverse community of industry leaders who lend their knowledge and insight to the strategic issues facing the industry and the CM profession, identifies and assists in the development of future leaders, and takes an active role in supporting the mission of CMAA.

Real Estate Industry Collaborates to Fill Talent Pipeline

Washington, DC, USA - Today, 29 real estate industry organizations, representing more than 10 million jobs, announced a ground-breaking collaboration to highlight the diverse career paths within the real estate sector.

The first initiative of this collaboration is a new website entitled Careers Building Communities (www.CareersBuildingCommunities.org), which allows visitors to navigate through the scores of career paths across all sectors of real estate. For the first time, students in high school, college, technical programs and community colleges can explore possible career pathways within real estate by taking an interactive quiz and discover career opportunities.

As the industry seeks to fill millions of jobs, this site serves as an all-inclusive resource for students, educators, career changers and other stakeholders to explore the unlimited opportunities in the field of real estate.

Omaha Public Schools Leader is CMAA's Person of the Year

TurnquistWashington, DC - Dr. Antoinette Turnquist, Chief Operations Officer of Omaha Public Schools, was honored as Person of the Year by the Construction Management Association of America at CMAA’s National Conference & Trade Show on October 10. Presentation of the award capped an annual CMAA gathering that drew more than 1,200 professionals to Washington, DC.

The Person of the Year is an industry leader who has made significant contributions on behalf of the construction management industry and profession. Recent honorees include Thella Bowens of the San Diego Regional Airport Authority; Mark Webb of University Health System, San Antonio; and Richard Sage, PE, CCM, of Sound Transit.

Dr. Turnquist was honored for her innovative management and leadership of the Omaha Public Schools 2014 Bond Program, providing more than $420 million for a wide range of school improvements and new construction. She has relied on professional construction managers and program managers, and advanced alternative project delivery methods to improve schedule and cost outcomes. 

In addition, Dr. Turnquist created many opportunities for Omaha’s Small Emerging Businesses to participate in this important design and construction program. She has also committed to a district-wide Green Schools Initiative, and numerous district schools have been awarded the U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon.

CMAA Honors Outstanding Projects of the Year

McLean, VA – The Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) recognized 17 projects for outstanding achievements in construction management at its National Conference & Trade Show in Washington, DC. Chosen from among these Project Achievement Award Winners, the Project of the Year was the New United States Courthouse in Los Angeles, CA.

In addition, the awards judges singled out another project for special recognition, bestowing CMAA’s first Power of Community Award on the new elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, which replaced Sandy Hook Elementary, the scene of a terrible tragedy in 2012. The project is owned by the Town of Newtown, CT. CM was performed by STV|DPM along with Consigli Construction and Svigals + Partners Architects.

CMAA Announces Key Employee Promotions

McLean, VA, USA – The Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) has announced three key promotions today, a move that advances both professional development and certification efforts for the Association.

Nicholas Soto has been appointed to Vice President of Professional Development, a position which brings together both professional development and certification operations to achieve greater efficiencies and delivery to members.

Since 2011, Soto has been responsible for growing the Association’s certification program into what it is today, a credential which has been gaining widespread acceptance and popularity in the construction industry. Under his leadership, the program has grown by more than 300%, a testament to his dedication and success. Previously, he held the role of Vice President of Certification.

In his new role, Soto will provide planning, development, design, and delivery of the Association’s professional educational programs and products for both CMAA and the Construction Manager Certification Institute, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CMAA.

Colin Biddle, former Certification Manager, is now Director of Certification. Since 2017, Biddle has helped drive the CCM Champion program, and has assisted in the transition of the Construction Manager-in-Training program under the purview of the Construction Manager Certification Institute (CMCI).

Andrea Pavon, former Certification Associate, is now Certification Manager. She has been instrumental in maintaining a high level of customer service with the rise in program interest and through the growth of the CCM program since 2011.

Chris Payne, PE, CCM is New Chair of CMAA

McLean, VA – Christopher Payne, PE, CCM, executive vice president and chief operating officer of MBP, became chair of the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) at the Association’s National Conference and Trade Show in Washington, DC. 

Payne has more than 30 years’ experience in construction management and design and has served on the CMAA Board of Directors since 2009. In assuming this leadership position, he said the Association “will continue to advance our profession – promoting professional construction/program management, building on partnerships with allied associations, and increasing awareness through our CCM certification program.”

CMAA also elected the following officers for 2017-2018:

Rick Panos, CCM Appointed CMAA's First Visiting CCM

McLean, VA – Rick Panos, CCM has been appointed CMAA's Visiting Certified Construction Manager.

Panos has been a CMAA colleague, PCM instructor, conference presenter, and committed CMAA member and volunteer for many years," added CMAA's President & CEO, Andrea S Rutledge, CAE. "His technical experience will be an asset not only to our professional development team, but to CMAA as a whole."

Rick is currently the Director of Construction Management at Simplus Management, and has a long track history performing construction/project management services. Rick's role represents a new direction for CMAA and for the professional development team in particular. Through our new Visiting CCM, CMAA has access to Rick's experience, not only as a professional CM, but also as a CCM and an engaged CMAA leader and teacher.
