Creating Opportunities for Respectful Environments
CMAA seeks to be a respectful space and to model the behaviors that encourage civility and respect. Please help us all learn how to create, sustain, and support an environment where:
- We communicate honestly and with integrity.
- We treat each other with dignity and respect.
- We are responsible for our own learning and development.
- We are responsible for contributing to the learning of others.
- We are responsible for the growth and development of CMAA.
Let’s work together to create opportunities for respectful environments throughout the program and construction management profession.
This page of the CMAA website is designed to bring together CMAA’s positions and other work on the topic.
CMAA Statement of Values
Most recently revised in 2025, these statements form a Board of Directors-approved document expressing CMAA’s organizational values for both the profession and the association. They are understood as a contemporary expression of CMAA’s historical values and as a foundation for decision making and organizational commitments.
Among the 11 statements, approved on April 22, 2025, is the following:
- Respectful Member Experiences - In order to achieve the best possible outcomes for the association, CMAA seeks to create member experiences where all people are treated with dignity and respect. Further, CMAA invites all to pursue any opportunity in its membership, leadership, and activities.
CMAA Position Statements
The CMAA Position Statements form a Board of Directors-approved document expressing the views of CMAA on specific topics. For each topic there is a core statement and supporting documentation.
By compiling the statements into a single document, CMAA seeks to accomplish several objectives.
The Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Position Statements are designed to accomplish the following objectives:
- Affirm organizational values; translate values into action.
- Position CMAA to act, in a timely and consistent manner.
- Meet outcomes and strategies for shaping the profession and establishing CMAA as the authoritative voice for the profession.
Section 3.0 Creating Respectful Environments
[Revisions to this section are under review by the Board of Directors. Approval is expected in June.]
Code of Professional Conduct
The CMAA Code of Professional Conduct (approved October 28, 2024) is voluntarily agreed to by members of the association and represents the aspirations of the profession relative to clients, owners, colleagues, and the public.
“CMAA Members” as used in this code is a term that applies to all members in performance of their services for construction programs and projects. CMAA Members provide a broad range of services to their clients and employers that encompass program, project, and construction management and also serving as owner advisors or representatives.
The code is rooted in the historical values of the profession and linked directly to the CMAA Statement of Values.
Four fundamental principles form the foundation of the code: Ethical Practice, Professional Excellence, Responsibility to the Public, and Client-Centered Practice.
Under the heading of Ethical Practice, the CMAA Board of Directors has approved the following:
- CMAA Members should strive to create a diverse workforce and should respect the rights of others by not discriminating on the basis of race, color, gender, marital status, religion, national origin, age, disability, or sexual orientation.
- CMAA Members should have a zero-tolerance policy for any form of harassment.
Creating Opportunities for Respectful Environments (CORE) Committee
This Board-approved committee is charged with the following responsibilities:
- To propose and prioritize policy, strategies, and tactics to support CMAA’s commitments to treating all persons with dignity and respect as reflected in the Strategic Framework, the Statement of Values, and the CMAA Position Statements.
- To promote, develop, and prepare CMAA members to build and sustain teams and work cultures that are respectful.
- To serve as a resource to chapter groups and directors on matters related to building chapter communities and hosting events where all persons are treated with dignity and respect.
Culture of Care
CMAA took the Culture of CARE Pledge as part of its commitment to a safe and respectful environment. The Culture of CARE is an initiative created in partnership between the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and the AGC of Washington to advance the construction industry as the industry of choice for talented workers.
