This unusual project of a gifted National Memorial from the Netherlands, coupled with the need for close management of the general contractor, created a number of challenges for AFG from planning through close-out. While original estimates expected 35% of the panels would need restoration, unforeseen structural corrosion and structural integrity loss of the beams became apparent during initial inspections. When it was discovered that an additional 30% of the panels would need replacement, AFG found ways to save time from the schedule by utilizing a power cleaning system and not only replaced panels but also modified the design to prevent further deterioration.
