“I loved the interaction between attendees and industry representatives, the connections I made with other potential CM’s, and I even learned a thing or two from the students!”

Build New Relationships, Broaden Perspectives

"Rising CM allowed me to network with peers from across the country, all in one place. I was able to connect with individuals from growing companies to the ‘big guys’ in the industry.”

Reinvigorate Your Passion!

“The conference gave me a much better understanding of not only the path to becoming a CCM, but the importance of becoming certified. The motivation from others that are in a similar path is powerful and should be embraced!”

This year's Rising CM Conference in Las Vegas is not going to be your average conference. We are planning high-energy, interactive sessions that promote collaboration and team-building; we've sat through enough lectures in school to realize that it's time for something different!

What Stays in Vegas: A Behind the Scenes Look at Las Vegas Construction

Presented by Neil Opfer, Associate Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Construction  at the University of Las Vegas.

Las Vegas had a population of 800 in 1911.  Then gambling in Nevada was legalized in 1931 and helped the city to grow to over 2 million residents and approximately 40 million visitors each year.  The City has 15 of the 25 largest hotels in the World and 7 of the Top 10 largest grossing nightclubs in the U.S.  Along the way, Las Vegas was once a playground and key business locale for organized crime.  Graft and skimming from the construction of hotel/casinos through to their operation was a part of life.  Whether political payoffs, ghost employees on construction sites, quadruple billings for the same palm trees in the landscaping or 1,000% markups on construction hardware, the City has seen it all including bankruptcies on billion-dollar projects.  In the most recent past, defects may have cost the Mandalay Bay Hotel/Casino $50 million to repair.  Defects have rendered the Harmon Tower at MGM's City Center a problem that may require the demolition of a $250 million tower.  The deaths of 13 workers Citywide in a three-year timeframe including 6 on City Center led Nevada in 2010 to implement mandatory OSHA 10 Training for all workers and OSHA 30 Training for all supervisors on construction projects.  This session highlights many of the projects, issues and their players that have comprised this history.

Delivering Better Projects through Fostering Lean Construction and Integrated Project Delivery Behaviors

Presented by David Umstot, PE, President, Umstot Project and Facilities Solutions, LLC

Lean construction and integrated project delivery are becoming more widely used with great success to delivery greater value to the owner. See this in practice with the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD), which is $1 billion into a $1.555 billion capital bond program. Learn from SDCCD's former Vice Chancellor of Facilities Management how the agency is:

  • Structuring design-build solicitations
  • Encouraging IPD practices into design/build
  • Leveraging design/build to create collaborative IPD
  • Using target value budgeting to delivery projects
  • Fostering lean enterprise systems and lean construction techniques
  • Requiring the use of BIM for design and construction of all new buildings.

Even if You are on the Right Track, You'll Get Run Over if You Just Sit There Tweeting About It

Presented by Sean Joyner, Princeton University and Dareen Salama, CMIT, STV

In simple words initiative means seeing something that needs to be done and starting it. It means taking the first step rather than waiting for someone else or for a “better time.”

No one respects employees who need to be told everything that needs to be done. Bosses like employees that are proactive and willing to take initiative. Be that employee! Discuss successful (and not so successful) ways to approach your boss with new proposals. Learn some tricks and tips to leverage social media and technology to make yourself indispensable to your organization.

Vegas High Roller - Observation Wheel Design and Construction

Presented by Brandon Sullivan, PE/Engineer and Mary Ferguson, PE/Engineer, Arup San Francisco, Structural

The Vegas High Roller is currently in construction, and when complete, it will be the world’s tallest observation wheel at 550 feet.  It is the centerpiece of the new LINQ development, owned by Caesars Entertainment, and will carry a groundbreaking 1120 passengers during each 30 minute revolution.  This iconic structure builds upon Arup’s past experiences with giant observation wheels like the London Eye and Singapore Flyer, but also incorporates many unique and innovative design features.  The design process was heavily influenced by constructability and construction sequencing, leading to a unique marriage of engineering, construction, and architecture.  The end result is an engineering marvel that will be an icon on the Vegas skyline for decades to come.
