GENERAL INFORMATION

Meeting Highlights

San Francisco: A Vibrant Mix of History, Architecture and Landmarks

When a major earthquake destroyed San Francisco in 1906 – leaving only 303 of its 28,000 buildings standing – the city became an "American phoenix," by rising out of the ashes and rebuilding to become one of the country’s most populous and fascinating cities.

Now an international tourist destination, San Francisco is rich with history, architecture and famous landmarks. Its legendary steep rolling hills and cable cars, the famous Golden Gate Bridge and infamous Alcatraz Island, its mix of vibrant neighborhoods including its celebrated Chinatown, all make San Francisco a city with multiple layers to explore.

The variety the city offers makes it a great place to host CMAA’s National Conference & Trade Show.

Revered for its mix of Victorian and modern architecture, San Francisco boasts the work of such architects as Bernard Maybeck, Arthur Brown, Jr., and Albert Pissis, and such landmark structures as the San Francisco Public Library, The Haas-Lilienthal House, the Palace of Fine Arts, City Hall, Coit Tower and Louise M Davies Symphony Hall.

Modern day landmarks continue to spring up, with current building-in-progress on the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park and the Contemporary Jewish Museum on Mission Street.

As you make plans to attend the 2008 CMAA National Conference & Trade Show, we hope you will take advantage of the many activities offered by both the conference and the city. We are looking forward to being your 2008 hosts!

Ron Price, CCM
Harris & Associates
Chairman, 2008 National Conference Committee
