Fortune Telling: Delusions and Overcoming Delay

Summary: Projects frequently finish behind schedule in spite of schedule updates that indicate that everything on the project is going well; until it is too late. This session will use real examples to illustrate how pending delays can be recognized and dealt with before the project is irrevocably behind schedule. The seminar will examine multiple ways of assessing earnings trends in order to predict the completion date more reliably, than the dates shown in the CPM schedule updates.

Fortune Telling: Is Your Schedule Update Telling You What You Think It Is?

Summary: The long-accepted state of CM practice is that a contractor's monthly schedule update is used to predict the likely finish date of a project. However, new research indicates that this commonly accepted information is rarely correct. Learn a better way to project a completion date using earned value metrics and historical experience based on dozens of actual projects.

Realizing the Benefits of CPM and Pull Plan Scheduling for Large Scale Projects

Summary: Owners have typically required detailed baseline CPM schedules but often do not rely on these schedules to manage the day to day activities, relying instead on subcontractor schedules or spreadsheets.
Pull planning techniques have helped optimize subcontractor schedules by communicating the intent of schedules more efficiently.

Massachusetts Port Authority recognized the need for both CPM schedules and detailed pull plans, redefined the requirements of CPM schedule deliverables but vastly simplified them to focus on key milestones and summary level tasks, defined processes and expectations, and stipulated techniques to integrate CPM and pull plan schedules to realize the benefits of both techniques.
