Design-Build: Successful Outcomes Include Your Owner (Six Zones of Influence)

Summary: "Faster"..."Cheaper"..."Less finger pointing"

These are the buzzwords surrounding the implementation of design-build. Couple these with the false perception that owners can wash their hands once the team is selected, sit back, and watch the project come to realization and this could be a recipe for headaches. In order for an owner to get the best result, with excellence in execution and exceeding expectations of the design, their role is as important as the design-builder. Learn the six areas where an owner's involvement is critical to ensuring their satisfaction with the end result.

Job Order Contracting: An Alternative Delivery Method

Summary: An increasing number of owners have turned to Job Order Contracting (JOC) to efficiently and effectively tackle their repair, alteration and new construction needs. JOC is ideal for accomplishing repairs and alterations during peak construction periods or in the face of looming deadlines. This session offers an introduction to the JOC construction procurement method. This method helps owners overcome the challenges of difficult timeframes, budgets and workloads, and quickly procure their repair and renovation needs. This presentation will use real-life case studies and statistics to study the details of Job Order Contracting from bid to delivery.

P3 Case Study: Canadian Projects

Summary: Canada’s P3 market has been described as the “gold standard” for other nations, with more than 200 projects, valued at more than $60 billion, in the last 20 years. What can professionals in other nations learn from the Canadian approach? This seminar presents a balanced perspective of the P3 delivery process using a case study of the Kelowna and Vernon Hospitals in British Columbia. The seminar examines risks and best practices and presents the lessons learned. As the P3 delivery process in the US begins to move beyond transportation projects to social infrastructure, this presentation provides a sneak peak at the future of the industry and how Canadian firms are paving the way in the use of P3 procurements.

Pioneering the Next Frontier of Collaboration

Summary: Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) has become a buzzword in design and construction, a concept embraced by many but practiced by few. With owners and practitioners hesitant to sign Integrated Forms of Agreement (IFOA) that incentivize positive behavior but share risk, terms like “IPD-Lite” and “hybrid delivery” have gained traction. But in 2011 Sutter Health, Skanska and NBBJ embarked on a journey to jointly design, construct and deliver the Palo Alto Medical Foundation San Carlos Center under an Integrated Form of Agreement (IFOA) with lean project delivery—one of the first “true” IPD projects on the West Coast.

Quality Practices in Design-Build Project Delivery

Summary: As one of the largest single public works projects underway in the United States, the New  York Bridge Project is a $3.9 billion initiative to replace the existing Tappan Zee Bridge carrying the NY State Thruway over the Hudson River.

This presentation will examine the systems and technology deployed to support the project quality process including: on- and off-site quality verification; electronic inspection and testing records; requirements verification; non-conformance management, and acceptance records. The benefits and implications of electronic systems for these activities will be reviewed including their integration with the established state construction oversight organization and practices.

Surety Bonding and Risk Management for P3 Projects

Summary: As the benefits of e-collaboration expand, so too do the risks associated with data security. This session puts a practical risk management framework around cyber-security issues, discussing acceptance, mitigation, avoidance, and transfer strategies. The panel also considers assignment of data security risk in standard and emerging contract forms, and the evolving case law of liability and damages in cyber security.

Trends in Owners Perception of CM Fees in Alternative Delivery Methods [Temporarily Unavailable]

Summary: This session will evaluate relevant construction management fees and compare with regional multi-agency fee structures and provide benchmarking basis and potential savings strategies. Increasingly, agencies seem to be enticed by potential savings through sharing standard documents and services. Explore the experience of the Regional Construction Procurement Committee (RCPC) in California, in terms of perceived cost and time savings, perceived risk shift, favorable payment schedules, and lessened day-to-day coordination between designer and general contractor.

Will Adopting Innovative Contracting Formats and Construction Trends End In Adventureland? [Temporarily Unavailable]

Summary: The promise of the innovative construction contracting formats and trends (e.g. IPD, PPP, Design-Build, 3-D printing, lean philosophies) is projects where collaboration and efficiency prevail and costly disputes and prescriptive requirements are distant memories, but how do we avoid a new frontier of greater complexity with unanticipated and non-traditional risks? The session participants will explore ways to ensure that we find ourselves in Fantasyland through risk identification and management, early dispute resolution and cost-efficient risk sharing.
