Robots and Hackers and Drones, Oh My! The Ethical Challenges of Emerging Technology

Summary: With the frenetic pace of technology advancement, it is sometimes unclear what "side effects" accompany new solutions. It is easy to embrace the next newest thing without thoughtful regard for the ramifications. This presentation explores the ethical role of CM professionals in recommending and using new technology. It will provoke thought and reflection on CM practices beyond "does this work?" to "does this benefit stakeholders?

Shaping the Model for Lifecycle BIM

Summary: The true benefit of BIM lies in the beneficial reuse and analysis of data and information, but can we really trust all information provided to us in the model by the architect, engineer, contractor, or consultant? What are the checking procedures that a model should undergo for us to be able to truly trust all information output from the model? This session will address possible pitfalls if the Building Information Model is not thoroughly checked, and present workflow best practices for model validation and model conditioning to further prepare the model for effective information extraction.

Surety Bonding and Risk Management for P3 Projects

Summary: While the P3 model allows most financing, construction, and operational risks to be transferred to a private developer, U.S. P3s often require  surety bonding to protect the public interest and ensure against default or non-payment.  This session explores how sureties are adapting to the unique challenges and risks presented by U.S. P3 projects.

Sustainable Remediation: Bringing the Triple Bottom Line to Environmental Cleanups

Summary: Environmental remediation is often a necessary and fundamental step in the project development process. While often thought of as inherently environment-friendly, remediation efforts have tended to be cost-intensive and disruptive, with big carbon footprints.

Environmental remediation approaches are now being challenged to factor in the "triple bottom line", balancing regulatory cleanup requirements, social impact, and cost.

The Public Building Commission of Chicago used new sustainable remediation tools to great benefit in a program that developed green buildings on environmentally challenged sites in economically blighted neighborhoods, and leveraged state and federal funding to make it happen. The program created lasting social and economic value and helped forward the development of the Greener Cleanup process.

Trends in Owners Perception of CM Fees in Alternative Delivery Methods [Temporarily Unavailable]

Summary: This session will evaluate relevant construction management fees and compare with regional multi-agency fee structures and provide benchmarking basis and potential savings strategies. Increasingly, agencies seem to be enticed by potential savings through sharing standard documents and services. Explore the experience of the Regional Construction Procurement Committee (RCPC) in California, in terms of perceived cost and time savings, perceived risk shift, favorable payment schedules, and lessened day-to-day coordination between designer and general contractor.

Use Meditation Techniques to Start the Project, Rather Than Finish It!

Summary: Millions of dollars have been spent in dispute resolution AFTER the project is over and mediation is the most successful technique. This session takes the lessons learned in mediation and applies them to enabling a partnering and collaboration atmosphere from the beginning and throughout the project. This transparent and open teaming atmosphere is a significant contributor to on-time and on-budget project completion.
