GSA's Peck Backs CCM for 'Consistency, Quality and Timeliness'

Declaring that the Certified Construction Manager (CCM) credential "establishes standards that complement our Global Project Management strategies supporting consistency, quality and timeliness," Public Buildings Service Commissioner Robert Peck last week stated that the General Services Administration is encouraging its project managers to include CCMs among its consultants.

Peck spoke at the 2011 Owners Forum presented by the Construction Management Association of America in San Antonio, Texas. He outlined GSA's initiatives in sustainability, workforce mobility, commissioning and other areas.

"We need to prove to the American people and to Congress that we are the most efficient organization we can possibly be," Peck said. He went on to discuss the value GSA assigns to qualified consultants.

"We don't get our work done by ourselves," Peck said. "We don't have many projects that don't have Construction Managers. We do encourage CM credentialing," he added.

He noted that although the CCM is not mandatory for bidders seeking GSA contracts, "If you have CCM credentialed people, you could get a preference."

The CCM, he added, "is certainly an asset in tight budget times."

The CCM program is administered by the Construction Manager Certification Institute (CMCI) and accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) under international standard ISO 17024.

CMAA's Owners Forum drew approximately 400 people to San Antonio for a three-day exploration of critical trends and issues in buildings, transportation and water/wastewater markets. Next year's forum will take place on May 6-8 in Long Beach, Calif.
