The Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) has published an updated edition of its Owner’s Guide to Construction and Program Management:  Enabling Project Success Under Any Delivery Method, an introductory guide for public and private owners to understand the roles and responsibilities of the key professionals, such as Construction Managers (CM) and Program Managers (PM), that are critically important to the success of a construction program and/or project.

The 24-page Owner’s Guide outlines the expertise recommended for a successful planning, design and construction process. It introduces Construction and Program Management practices; explains how those practices can enhance a project success; outlines the key differences between CM and PM; and provides guidance in selecting CMs and PMs, among other key topics.

With respect to key differences between CM and PM, the Owner’s Guide notes, “The primary differences between CM and PM are the size, complexity and scope of the projects/programs.” Ultimately, the Owner’s Guide serves as key tool for owners concerned about sharing risk and control across a project team.  “The addition of a CM does not lessen the owner’s control over the project, but enhances it through the owner’s acquiring access to experienced design and construction professionals” the Owner’s Guide states.
The Owner’s Guide was created by CMAA nearly a decade ago and was updated to reflect the expanded 2010 edition of CMAA’s Construction Management Standards of Practice.  The new Guide is accessible on CMAA’s website www.cmaanet.org  at no cost.
